What is the Fish Feed Extrusion Process?

The fish feed extrusion process refers to the thermal and mechanical treatment of a feed mixture using a specialized extruder machine. The goal is to improve the nutritional quality and physical structure of the feed, making it suitable for aquatic species.

How It Works:

 Mixing & Preconditioning:
Raw materials (such as grains, fishmeal, vitamins, and minerals) are finely ground and mixed. In wet extrusion, the mixture is then preconditioned using steam to improve starch gelatinization and protein denaturation.

 Extrusion:
The pre-conditioned feed mixture is fed into the extrusion chamber, where it is subjected to:

• High pressure

• High temperature

• Friction (in dry extrusion) or steam (in wet extrusion)

This environment cooks the mixture and forces it through a die, forming pellets.

 Pellet Expansion & Cutting:
As the pellets exit the die, the sudden drop in pressure causes them to expand or “puff.” They are then cut into desired lengths.
